Lancaster– WAVE (Wireless Advanced Vehicle Electrification) is proud to announce the successful demonstration of an industry leading 250kW Wireless Power Transfer System prototype. Product delivery to AVTA (Antelope Valley Transit Authority) is expected later this year.

 

AVTA Board Chairman Marvin Crist noted, “This is yet another important step in Antelope Valley Transit Board’s transformational push to go completely zero emission by 2018. The acquisition of these chargers strengthens the infrastructural foundations that will allow our zero emission fleet to seamlessly complete any route within Antelope Valley Transit Authority’s service area. WAVE’s innovative technology transfers power through the air, from an embedded charging pad placed in the pavement to a receiving pad mounted on the vehicle’s undercarriage seven to eight inches above, minimizing the need for on-board power storage. Once operational, our systems en-route chargers will allow AVTA’s electric buses to charge during layovers as passengers board and disembark. This “top-off” charge capability significantly extends the range of AVTA’s electric bus fleet, eliminating any range anxiety associated with electric buses. Wave’s new systems are installed at Lancaster City Park and the Palmdale Transportation Center. WAVE’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Masquelier, stated, “WAVE is honored to have been chosen to play a role in AVTA’s pioneering drive to go completely zero emissions. WAVE Announces First UL Field Certification of 50kW Wireless Charging System with Antelope Valley Transit Agency

SALT LAKE CITY, UT, USA – February 17, 2017 – Wireless Advanced Vehicle Electrification (WAVE) announces the first-ever Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Field Evaluation Certification for its state-of-the-art Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) product.  The 50kW wireless charging system was deployed at Lancaster City Park and Palmdale Transportation Center for the Antelope Valley Transit Agency (AVTA).

UL is a Nationally Recognized Testing Lab (NRTL), and often, the preferred NRTL by building departments nationwide.  Until this time, no official UL standard existed for wireless chargers, making it challenging to build and deliver a completely safe system that operates in public locations.  In addition, the Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) in both Lancaster and Palmdale require UL labeling to ensure the products meet their high quality and safety standards.

WAVE has had a long-term relationship with UL through its participation in the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Wireless Charging Standards Committee, SAE J-2954. WAVE worked closely with UL and the UL SAE Committee Members to determine that a UL Field Evaluation Certification was the most logical approach.  UL Field Evaluations bridge the gap between uncertified equipment and a standards-based installation.  This solution allows customers to feel confident that they can safely operate their newly-installed equipment and that it meets all required regulations.

The WAVE wireless charging system uses a charging pad that lays flush with the pavement, is sturdy enough to be driven on all day without damage, and wirelessly charges the bus during routine stops. In-route charging means less batteries, reduced vehicle weight, higher passenger capacity, and extended vehicle range.

WAVE Technology Install Completed for City of McAllen Electric Buses

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — Wireless Advanced Vehicle Electrification (WAVE) has completed a project with The City of McAllen’s Transit Department, Metro McAllen (McAllen), to install WAVE technology on two buses that include an all-electric, Zero-Emission Propulsion System (ZEPS) provided by Complete Coach Works (CCW).

WAVE technology transfers power through the air, from embedded charging pad placed in the pavement to the vehicle’s undercarriage 7 to 8 inches above, minimizing the need for on-board power storage.

Mario Delgado, Transit Director for McAllen shares, “This project has been a long time coming. The predominant reason it made sense for us was that it will allow us to charge our buses while they are in service. It will be idle while it’s stopped over the pad, but we won’t have to pull the bus out of service to charge it. We will be able to complete one full day with the inductive charging, so it’s just very convenient. We will give our bus the range it needs during a whole day without disturbing our service. The WAVE in-route charging roughly doubles the range of the bus on a given day.”

An embedded charging pad has been placed in the asphalt at one of the McAllen stops so that the bus route will be unchanged. The embedded pads will measure about three feet square. The pads are flat and seamlessly blend with the asphalt causing no harm to anyone/anything that pass over it.

“The bus will arrive over the charging pad every hour, initiating a layover of about 10-15 minutes so that the bus can charge, causing no disruption to the route,” notes Delgado.

When asked about the relationship with WAVE Delgado stated, “It’s been a very good working relationship. There is a level of respect and trust between us and it’s worked well.”
